How to choose a youth soccer club in Puerto Rico

1. Start with age and level. Ages 3–7 are usually recreational; travel and academy programs typically begin around 8–9. Pick the level that matches your child today, not in three years.
2. Check distance and schedule. Two or three practices a week plus weekend games add up — a club 15 minutes away beats a slightly better club 45 minutes away for most families.
3. Compare total cost per season. Ask what the fee covers: uniforms, tournaments, travel and league registration are often extra.
4. Watch a session and talk to the coach before you commit. Most clubs offer a free trial or evaluation.

What youth soccer costs in Puerto Rico

• Published registration fees nationally: most clubs that list a fee charge $95–$300 per season (median $160). Too few Puerto Rico clubs publish fees for a state figure yet.
• These published fees are mostly recreational and base registration fees. Competitive and travel clubs often share their full fees only at tryouts; ask for the total annual cost in writing.
• Beyond the fee, budget for uniforms, tournament entry, league registration and travel — these add up fastest on competitive teams.

When are tryouts?

Most competitive clubs hold tryouts in late spring (typically May–June) for teams that start in the fall. From the 2026–27 season, US youth soccer groups players by school year (August 1 – July 31) instead of birth year, so check which age group your child falls in before tryouts. Recreational programs usually register players in summer for fall and in winter for spring, with no tryout.
